The maximum total is 36, and 18 or above is generally considered favourable.
But the score is only the first layer. A serious matchmaking analysis must also examine Mangal dosha severity, Nadi dosha cancellations, longevity comparison, the 7th and 8th houses of both charts, and the dasha periods active around the proposed marriage date. A score of 28 with strong Nadi dosha is very different from a score of 20 with no doshas. A "Manglik" partner is not always a problem — classical texts list a dozen cancellation conditions.

No. The 18-point threshold is a guideline, not a verdict. A score of 16 with no doshas and excellent dasha synchrony can be a far better match than a score of 22 with strong Nadi dosha. We look at the full picture — the score is one input, not the conclusion.
This is one of the most over-feared situations in matchmaking. Classical texts list many conditions under which Mangal dosha is reduced or cancelled — placement of Mars in certain houses, aspects from Jupiter, age of partners, and others. We do a complete cancellation review before declaring any chart "Manglik" in a problematic sense.
Yes, to a degree. A strong muhurat — one aligned with both kundalis and the favourable transits of the day — can soften certain compatibility weaknesses. We can suggest such a muhurat as part of our Shubh Muhurat service after the Milan report is complete.
