THREE TYPES

Which griha pravesh do you need?

The Vedic tradition recognises three distinct types of housewarming — each with its own muhurat rules. The right type for your situation determines which dates apply.

TYPE · 01

Apoorva

अपूर्व गृह प्रवेश

The first-ever entry into a newly constructed home. The most ritually significant type, requiring the strongest muhurat. Should be performed soon after Vastu Shanti puja.

TYPE · 02

Sapoorva

सपूर्व गृह प्रवेश

Re-entry into an existing home after extended absence — typically following long travel, foreign residence, or family separation. Restores the energy of the home.

TYPE · 03

Dwandhwah

द्वंद्व गृह प्रवेश

Entry into a home after renovation, repair after natural calamity, or restoration work. Required to re-sanctify a home where significant changes have been made.

An important note before booking your date

The dates below are generally auspicious based on classical panchanga. However, the strongest griha pravesh muhurat must also be checked against the kundali of the head of the household — particularly Tara Bal, Chandra Bal, and the strength of the 4th house in their chart. Sutaki (period of birth) and Patak (period of death) in the immediate family must be honoured. For the final date, a personalised muhurat consultation is strongly recommended.

THE LOGIC

Why these specific dates?

A griha pravesh muhurat must satisfy multiple Vedic conditions simultaneously — auspicious nakshatra, tithi, weekday, plus the construction stage and household head's chart strength.

Classical jyotish has identified specific nakshatras as ideal for entering a new home — those whose ruling deities preside over stability, prosperity and protection. Rohini, Mrigashira, Anuradha, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Pushya, Revati, Hasta and Chitra are considered most favourable.

The tithi matters too. Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) is generally preferred. Within the waxing fortnight, the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th tithis are particularly favoured. Amavasya (new moon), Chaturthi, Navami, and Chaturdashi are typically avoided.

The weekday is equally important. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the most auspicious for griha pravesh. Sunday is permitted with conditions. Tuesday and Saturday are best avoided unless cancelled by very strong nakshatra.

Finally, certain entire periods are excluded — Kharmas, Holashtak, Chaturmas (for Apoorva type), Adhik Maas, Pitru Paksha, and Sutaki/Patak periods in the immediate family. The dates above honour all these exclusions.

CEREMONY CHECKLIST

The eight rituals of griha pravesh

A traditional griha pravesh includes these eight key components. The muhurat date sets the timing — the ceremony itself follows the prescribed sequence.

1
Vastu Shanti
वास्तु शांति

Purification of the eight directions and the central Vastu Purusha — performed before entry.

2
Ganesh Puja
गणेश पूजन

Invocation of Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles — the first deity worshipped on the muhurat day.

3
Navagraha Puja
नवग्रह पूजन

Pacification of the nine planetary deities to ensure their continued blessing on the home.

4
Kalash Sthapana
कलश स्थापना

Installation of the sacred water-pot with mango leaves and coconut at the entrance.

5
Havan / Yajna
हवन / यज्ञ

Sacred fire ceremony with offerings to Agni and the specific devatas of the home.

6
First Entry
प्रथम प्रवेश

The head of the household enters first with the right foot, holding the kalash — at the precise muhurat.

7
Kitchen Inauguration
रसोई आरंभ

First cooking on the new kitchen — traditionally boiling milk until it overflows, symbolising prosperity.

8
Brahmin Bhojan
ब्राह्मण भोज

Feeding of priests and elders — concluding the ceremony with blessings for the new home.

PERIODS TO AVOID

Inauspicious windows excluded in 2026

These traditional periods are not included in our muhurat list — they are universally avoided for griha pravesh.

Kharmas
खरमास · मलमास

Sun in Sagittarius (mid-Dec to mid-Jan) and Pisces (mid-Mar to mid-Apr). All auspicious housewarming ceremonies strictly avoided.

Holashtak
होलाष्टक

Eight days preceding Holi (typically mid-March). Inauspicious for all sanskars including griha pravesh.

Chaturmas (Apoorva)
चातुर्मास

July to mid-November. For Apoorva first-entry, ceremonies paused. Sapoorva and Dwandhwah may continue in some traditions.

Adhik Maas
अधिक मास

Mid-May to mid-June 2026. All auspicious sanskars including griha pravesh paused during this intercalary month.

Pitru Paksha
पितृ पक्ष

The 15-day fortnight (Sept–Oct) dedicated to ancestors. No housewarming ceremonies performed.

Sutaki & Patak
सूतक व पातक

Period of birth (sutaki, 10 days) and death (patak, 13 days) in the immediate family — ceremonies postponed.

Eclipse Windows
ग्रहण काल

Days of solar and lunar eclipses and surrounding sutak period. Auspicious entry strictly prohibited.

Tuesday & Saturday
मंगल व शनि

Mars-ruled and Saturn-ruled weekdays generally avoided for griha pravesh unless cancelled by very strong nakshatra.

Specific Tithis
वर्जित तिथि

Amavasya, Chaturthi, Navami, and Chaturdashi are generally avoided for griha pravesh.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About Griha Pravesh 2026

Traditionally, the kundali of the head of the household (typically the eldest male family member or the legal owner of the property). In modern joint ownerships, the kundali of the primary earner or the family decision-maker is used. The muhurat aligns the moon, lagna, and 4th house of that person's chart with the chosen date.

Yes, but the type of ceremony is different. For rented homes, a simplified Sapoorva-style entry with basic puja is sufficient — not the full Apoorva ritual. The muhurat should still be chosen carefully, but the ceremony is shorter and the deities invoked are fewer.

If construction work is still ongoing but the family must move in due to genuine circumstances — completion delay, urgent relocation — a Sapoorva or Dwandhwah ceremony can be performed with a simpler muhurat. The full Apoorva ceremony is then performed later when the house is genuinely complete.

Sometimes yes. The main entry muhurat is the most critical. The kitchen inauguration (boiling milk) can be performed at the same muhurat or at a separately auspicious time later in the day. For some families, a second mini-muhurat is selected specifically for the kitchen.

The Vedic preference is for the muhurat to fall during the day — typically morning to early afternoon, after sunrise. Some traditions accept evening muhurats too. The specific lagna and choghadiya of the day determine the exact window. Late night entries are generally avoided.

Sutaki (post-birth 10–11 days) and Patak (post-death 13 days) periods of the immediate family must be honoured. After these periods end, the next available muhurat from this list can be used. For longer mourning periods or special family customs, please consult us before fixing the date.

Your home. Entered with grace.

The dates above are the year's most auspicious by general standards. The strongest moment for your family to enter the home — that needs your kundali on the table. We are here when you are ready.
